CHAPTER THREE

Now things were starting to make sense. Roz had said to me that my magic shouldn’t have been powerful enough to derail whatever Kam was doing and I had known she was right. But something was definitely blocking his powers. Which probably meant that he was trying to force something that wasn’t supposed to be happening. Or at least that’s what it would have meant in the witch world. Witches can do a lot of things, but we can’t disrupt the natural order of things and if we try to, it only ends in frustration.

After the final toast, Timur and his date left in search of some nightclub they’d heard about and the cousins drifted away too. Rafael headed for the table where Angel was sitting. She beamed up at him as he greeted the others sitting with her, including a handsome, silver-haired older man I assumed was her father.

Kirill Morosov carried an air of authority like a visible aura. He wore his gray hair swooped straight back, gangster style and it suited him. It was hard to tell from a distance, but his manner toward Rafael seemed polite, if guarded. It was clear, though, that Angel really, really wanted her father to like Rafael.

“I don’t mean to be difficult,” I said to Kam, “but does she look like she’s pining away for the groom?”

“I don’t have to look,” he said miserably. “Rafael Sarkissian is her soul mate.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

He sighed and drained the rest of his wine. “It’s complicated.”

He fell silent as he studied his empty glass and I didn’t think he was going to say anything else, but he surprised me. “Six generations ago, there was a quarrel,” he said, “a feud that involved one of my former selves.”

“Six generations?” I said, trying to do the math in my head. Almost 200 years.

“And you remember this?”

“I do,” he said. “And a deal was sealed to end the quarrel, a deal that involved an alliance between two families. An alliance that was between two particular people at this particular time and place.”

“What could possibly go wrong with that?” I said thinking about some of the spectacularly destructive witch clan feuds I’d heard about.

‘It was fine,” he said. “It was all going according to plan until Rika showed up here on the same day that Michael came home on a break between assignments. Usually all he does is sleep and eat when he’s home, but this time he walked down to the mermaid pool his mother was so thrilled to have added to the property.”

“And the rest is history,” I said.

“And the rest is a disaster.”

“But if Angel marries Rafael,” won’t that work, won’t that be the alliance that ends the feud?”

“Not unless Angel’s father signs off on it.”

I looked again at the table where Angel and her father were sitting. “It doesn’t look like there’s a problem.”

Kam scowled. “Kirill Morosov is a good actor.”

“Surely he can’t still be holding a grudge for his great-great-great grandfather,” I said.

“You don’t know many Russians, do you?” he said.
